Modeling Geographic Phenomena as Processes

چکیده

The common approach to modeling geographic phenomena is based in the objectoriented paradigm. A paradigm that is argued here to be inappropriate and even unable to capture the spatio-temporal essence of the “things” we model. These phenomena include migration, erosion, urban sprawl, percolation, and development, which form the basis of a geographer’s education in processes as opposed to objects. Modeling such phenomena as a collection of objects that undergoes change upon a spatial plain ignores that change defines the process. An alternative basis for modeling spatio-temporal phenomena is proposed that involves developing a conceptual framework that takes change as its core, a framework defined by process. The redefinition of modeling rudiments recommends new approaches to observation and measurement of geographic phenomena in order to develop an example of modeling geographic phenomena as processes.

A Useful Family of Stochastic Processes for Modeling Shape Diffusions

One of the new area of research emerging in the field of statistics is the shape analysis. Shape is defined as all the geometrical information of an object whose location, scale and orientation is not of interest. Diffusion in shape analysis can be studied via either perturbation of the key coordinates identifying the initial object or random evolution of the shape itself. Reviewing the f...

A Statistical Study of two Diffusion Processes on Torus and Their Applications

Diffusion Processes such as Brownian motions and Ornstein-Uhlenbeck processes are the classes of stochastic processes that have been investigated by researchers in various disciplines including biological sciences. It is usually assumed that the outcomes of these processes are laid on the Euclidean spaces. However, some data in physical, chemical and biological phenomena indicate that they cann...

Geo-spatial Analysis for Prediction of River Floods

Due to the serious climate change, severe weather conditions constantly change the environment’s phenomena. Floods turned out to be one of the most devastating catastrophes for Europe's population, economy and environment during the past decades. In this paper we are using geographic information systems (GIS) as a modeling tool for the prediction and prevention of such effects. We provide an em...

Modelling Spatially and Temporally Distributed Phenomena: New Methods and Tools for GRASS GIS

The concept of GRASS (Geographic Resources Analysis Support System) as an open system has created a favorable environment for integration of process based modeling and GIS. To support this integration a new generation of tools is being developed in the following areas: a) interpolation from multidimensional scattered point data, b) analysis of surfaces and hypersurfaces, c) modeling of spatial ...
